Located 200km south east from mainland Greece, Santorini enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with year-round agreeable conditions. As opposed to the usual four seasons that most countries and islands in Europe receive, the year in Santorini is mainly split into two seasons – summer and winter. Summer usually falls between March and October. At this time of year, daily lows are at their lowest at 11°C in March, whilst they’re at their highest at 23°C in August. At the other end of the scale, daily high temperatures are at their highest at 29°C in July and August, whilst they’re at their lowest at 16°C in March. Although the region does get particularly hot in late July and August – which are usually the hottest months of the year – the island is considerably cooler than some of its other Mediterranean counterparts, making it a popular choice for summer holidays.
The airport of Santorini is located 8 km far from Fira, the capital of the island. It receives both domestic flights all year round from Athens and Thessaloniki and in summer it also receives charters and direct flights from abroad. The flight time from Athens to Santorini is 45 min.
By Ferry Boat
The main port of Santorini is Athinios, about 8 km from Fira. There are daily ferries from the port of Piraeus in Athens to Santorini. In summer, there are also ferries from Rafina, the other port of Athens, which is the closest port to the international airport of Athens. Due to the frequency of ferry schedules, many visitors combine their visit to Santorini with hopping to other islands.
Given the beauty of Santorini's architecture, most hotels are small boutique style, so there will be NO reserved block of rooms in one hotel only. Participants are requested to book their own hotel rooms, giving each the opportunity to customize their Santorini experience according to their individual preferences. There are many wonderful hotel options within walking distance along the gorgeous caldera path from Petros Nomikos Conference Center.
