Clear Lens Extraction and IOL implantation

Clear Lens Extraction and IOL implantation

This technique is mainly applied in moderate and high degrees of myopia and hyperopia, usually in middle aged individuals (over 45 years) whose crystalline lens begins to develop cataract. It is an operation that corresponds to the standard cataract procedure, which simultaneously can correct any kind of refractive error. It is an easy and safe method that lasts only 10 to 15 minutes for each eye and is conducted under local anesthesia (anesthaetic drops). The patient remains at the hospital for one night in order to be close monitored. If a monofocal intraocular lens is used (the most common artificial intraocular lenses) it is important to mention that the eye’s ability to accommodate will be lost and reading glasses will be necessary after surgery. Nowadays, the possibility of a multifocal or accommodative intraocular lens implantation gives the ability to achieve far and near vision restoration by correcting presbyopia as well.
